Double-sided tape has adhesive coated on both sides of a cloth, paper, foam, film or tissue backing and is used for holding or mounting items.

Types of double-coated tapes:

Cloth double-sided tape is widely used in the convention industry for temporarily holding down carpets.
Foam two-sided tape is typically used to mount mirrors, signs, hooks and soap dispensers.
Film and Paper double-coated tape is generally used in bonding, mounting, splicing, and laminating applications.
Tissue double-sided tape is good for bonding to irregular surfaces.
ATG tape is used for picture framing and photo mounting.

Differences between double-coated adhesives:

Two-sided tapes with acrylic adhesivetypically have higher shear strength, are usually morepermanent/durable and have a gradual adhesion buildup. They alsotypically have a better resistance to higher temperatures, UV andsolvents. For instance if you are mounting a picture on the wall andthe picture is heavy a softer rubber adhesive will start separatingfrom itself sooner than the acrylic.
Double-sided tape with synthetic or hot melt rubber adhesivetypically have higher tack, but are also softer. They will normallyfeel stickier to the touch and will bond faster to a surface, but willalso have lower heat resistance, shear resistance, and sometimes UVresistance than the acrylics. Works great when those characteristic arenot needed and also usually less expensive than an acrylic.
